What's on Sale:
 Artist's Seconds that are slightly imperfect, still full of charm, and totally unique, beautiful items.
 Overstock items that are priced to sell. Including work from our local artists, from New York State artists and beyond.

We often get a question: "What makes this an artist's second? I don't see what's wrong with it!"

While it's true many of the seconds in our sale have minor imperfections, some of the items are overstock or come from an old collection of artists' work, and some items are experimental works of art. That's the fun of our second sale! You never know what you'll find, but you can surely find something beautiful at a great price.

Handwork, Ithaca's Artisan Cooperative is located in downtown Ithaca at 102 West State Street. Our store hours are Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 5 pm.

 Our sale is in-store only but we offer more than one way to shop: E-mail our staff at HandworkOnlineShop@gmail.com to request photos of our shelves and shop the sale from afar.

Our previous participant group asked us to continue, so here we go! We’ll pay attention to results from the Webb telescope, other NASA missions and astronomical discoveries, and we’ll review astronomy basics along the way.

We will meet on Zoom once a week and talk about what’s happening in space. Planetarium Director Steve Fentress is your moderator. For more details, email Steve at sfentress@rmsc.org.

Each weekly session is 45 minutes and will be conducted via Zoom. The Zoom link for this course will be emailed to you before the first session.

STEVE FENTRESS, DIRECTOR OF THE RMSC STRASENBURGH PLANETARIUM

Steve Fentress has many years of experience designing Planetarium programs for school groups as well as hands-on and in-depth programs for homeschoolers and youth groups. He has written articles for space.com and Griffith Observer magazine. He stays up to date by participating in planetarium educators’ networks and online seminars. His book Sky to Space: Astronomy Beyond the Basics with Comparisons, Ratios, and Proportions is available from Amazon, but we will not be using it in this course.

The laughs are coming to Auburn when Homebrewed Comedy hits the stage at Prison City Brewery North Street Urban Farm on Thursday, March 2. The laughs are coming to Auburn when Homebrewed Comedy hits the stage at Prison City Brewery North Street Urban Farm on Thursday, March 2. Sam Ike is headlining and Katlin McFee, James Fedkiw and host Mike Peters will be there, too. Tickets are $10 and available online and at the door. Seating at the North Street Urban Farm location begins at 6 p.m. and the show starts at 7. A full dinner menu is available. About the comedians: Mike Peters, a Binghamton comedian, specializes in self-deprecating, observational humor. A contributor for Funny or Die, Peters performed at the Funny Bone in Syracuse, the Greenwich Village Comedy Club in New York City, won the Utica Brews Laugh Contest and Uptown Roast Battle and opened for Super Troopers’ Rabbit, Erik Stolhanske, and Gilbert Gottfried. Peters produces shows all over New York and hosts his weekly podcast, On the Mic with Mike Peters. James Fedkiw hosted Syracuse's longest-running open mic at George O'Dea's Pub and has performed at the Funny Bone and all around New York. He's a regular in the Syracuse and Rochester areas, placed second in the Utica Brews contest and qualified for the Utica Cup finals. Katlin McFee is a Boston based comedian by way of the Midwest. She cut her comedy teeth in Indiana during her college years, in rooms surrounded by more corn fields than people. She draws upon her weird upbringing of as a queer kid in the farm land of Kentucky. Her self-deprecating style combined with blunt honesty and sharp wit make her an absolute joy to watch, and have allowed her to amass a number of credits in a short amount of time. She’s been featured on HBO’s Women In Comedy Festival as well as opened for national acts such as Andy Kindler, Eugene Mirman and more people who have been on Bob’s Burgers (for real). Sam Ike is a Boston native and uniquely funny comedian. Ike came up through the improv scene and began his stand-up career in 2016. Since then, he’s headlined shows all over the country and has performed at the Big Sky Festival, Limestone Comedy Festival and the San Francisco Sketchfest. He’s been on NPR’s You’re the Expert, the Bechdel Cast on the How Stuff Work Network and The Check Spot on Sirius XM.

The weekend-long Brave Brews: Celebrating Women in Craft Beverage Festival was inspired by the local success of Pink Boots Collaboration Brew Day® held at Prison City Brewing. Part of a national brewing collaborative project sponsored by the Pink Boots Society® to commemorate International Women’s Day, Prison City’s annual brew day participation has expanded from 20 to 100 participants over the past five years. This annual ritual will once again feature an expanded weekend of events in partnership with the City of Auburn’s Historic and Cultural Sites Commission and the New York State Equal Rights Heritage Center. On every Friday in March, the member wineries of the Cayuga Lake Wine Trail will be offering you a tank or barrel sample to go along with the purchase of your flight or tasting.

This isn’t just “getting an additional wine sample.” This is getting to taste a wine before it’s ready for the bottle. It’s getting to taste the wine before it’s mature, filtered, etc.

It’s getting to taste a part of the winemaking process.

The tank or barrel sample you have will* align with what’s in your flight or tasting selection, so you’ll get to experience the “before and after” of that wine.

But even if you aren’t an aficionado or connoisseur, this tasting will still be such an eye-opening experience and will give you a greater appreciation for the steps that go into creating your favorite wine.

Our previous participant group asked us to continue, so here we go! We’ll pay attention to results from the Webb telescope, other NASA missions and astronomical discoveries, and we’ll review astronomy basics along the way.

We will meet on Zoom once a week and talk about what’s happening in space. Planetarium Director Steve Fentress is your moderator. For more details, email Steve at sfentress@rmsc.org.

Steve Fentress has many years of experience designing Planetarium programs for school groups as well as hands-on and in-depth programs for homeschoolers and youth groups. He has written articles for space.com and Griffith Observer magazine. He stays up to date by participating in planetarium educators’ networks and online seminars. His book Sky to Space: Astronomy Beyond the Basics with Comparisons, Ratios, and Proportions is available from Amazon, but we will not be using it in this course.

Radisson LIVE: Radisson Corning has brought back its weekly live music every week indoors now through April featuring the hottest sounds of the local Finger Lakes region.  Guests can see a no-cover show inside from 6 pm to 9 pm while enjoying local wines, beers, and craft cocktails as well as a chef-crafted menu.  Beginning in late April, the Live scene will move outside to Market Street Social and expand to three nights a week, Thursday through Saturday.  The March schedule is as follows: March 4 – Another Round, March 10 – Mike Lucey, March 16 – Pat Kane, March 17 – Pat Comstock, March 31 – Rachel Beverly.

Have you ever seen 115-feet-high Lucifer Falls frozen over? You can’t drive to the overlook on the Rim Trail at Robert H. Treman State Park southeast of Ithaca, NY. You need to walk for about 15 minutes on the Rim Trail to the spectacular view back toward Lucifer Falls. This is the only section of the Rim Trail that commonly is open in the winter, and the Gorge Trail, which passes right next to the waterfall, is closed for the season. Radisson LIVE: Radisson Corning has brought back its weekly live music every week indoors now through April featuring the hottest sounds of the local Finger Lakes region.  Guests can see a no-cover show inside from 6 pm to 9 pm while enjoying local wines, beers, and craft cocktails as well as a chef-crafted menu.  Beginning in late April, the Live scene will move outside to Market Street Social and expand to three nights a week, Thursday through Saturday.  The March schedule is as follows: March 4 – Another Round, March 10 – Mike Lucey, March 16 – Pat Kane, March 17 – Pat Comstock, March 31 – Rachel Beverly.  

Recruitment Days: In preparation of the big change of hotel flags this summer, the soon to be Double Tree by Hilton Corning Downtown is now hiring. MISERY follows successful romance novelist Paul Sheldon, who is rescued from a car crash by his “number one fan,” Annie Wilkes, and wakes up captive in her secluded home. While Paul is convalescing, Annie reads his latest book and becomes enraged when she discovers the author has killed off her favorite character, Misery Chastain. Annie forces Paul to write a new Misery novel, and he quickly realizes Annie has no intention of letting him go anywhere. The irate Annie has Paul writing as if his life depends on it, and it does.

• The event is held on Saturday, March 11 or Sunday, March 12
• Tickets are sold as a Single Ticket for $60 (plus sales tax and service fees) and a Single Designated Driver ticket for $30 (plus sales tax and service fees)
• Ticket includes 6 wineries, with food and wine samples served at each.
  • The DD receives the food samples only, and non-alcoholic beverages
  • Coffee is provided by Cobblestone Coffee Roasters
• Ticket also includes a souvenir wine glass for each person
  • The DD will be provided their own style glass
• Multiple itineraries are available to choose from. Quantities of each are limited and cannot be increased.
• Groups and ticket sales are limited to 12.
• This is a sit-down event and most tables accommodate 4 people. If you’re traveling with more than 4 people, you may be split up into different tables. If you’re traveling with less than 4, you may be sat with other folks, who will likely end up as your friends at the end of that seating. Again, parties over 12 are prohibited.
• Your itineraries are reservations and you must stick to them: Early or late arrivals at each winery will only be accommodated if space permits. You also cannot stray from your purchased itinerary. If you aren’t on their list, they will not allow you in.
• Wineries reserve the right to refuse service to intoxicated customers, or those arriving too far outside of their designated time slot.

St. Pat’s Shindig: All Irish eyes will be smiling when Radisson Corning brings back the good times on St. Patty’s weekend with a free Irish-themed concert on March 17th from 6 pm to 9 pm featuring local Irish folk singer Pat Comstock.  In addition to traditional Irish music, revelers are invited to don their favorite green wears and enjoy Irish corned beef and other traditional foods and drinks in Radisson’s signature restaurant, Grill 1-2-5, and Steuben Bar.  Contact the restaurant directly at 607.962.5000 ext 127 for more info and reservations.

Radisson LIVE: Radisson Corning has brought back its weekly live music every week indoors now through April featuring the hottest sounds of the local Finger Lakes region.  Guests can see a no-cover show inside from 6 pm to 9 pm while enjoying local wines, beers, and craft cocktails as well as a chef-crafted menu.  Beginning in late April, the Live scene will move outside to Market Street Social and expand to three nights a week, Thursday through Saturday.  The March schedule is as follows: March 4 – Another Round, March 10 – Mike Lucey, March 16 – Pat Kane, March 17 – Pat Comstock, March 31 – Rachel Beverly.  

Recruitment Days: In preparation of the big change of hotel flags this summer, the soon to be Double Tree by Hilton Corning Downtown is now hiring. Recruitment Days will be held on location every Tuesday in March from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. Our previous participant group asked us to continue, so here we go! We’ll pay attention to results from the Webb telescope, other NASA missions and astronomical discoveries, and we’ll review astronomy basics along the way.

We will meet on Zoom once a week and talk about what’s happening in space. Planetarium Director Steve Fentress is your moderator. For more details, email Steve at sfentress@rmsc.org.

Steve Fentress has many years of experience designing Planetarium programs for school groups as well as hands-on and in-depth programs for homeschoolers and youth groups. He has written articles for space.com and Griffith Observer magazine. He stays up to date by participating in planetarium educators’ networks and online seminars. His book Sky to Space: Astronomy Beyond the Basics with Comparisons, Ratios, and Proportions is available from Amazon, but we will not be using it in this course.

From Upstate New York, Oona Grady (fiddle/viola/vocals) and James Gascoyne (guitar/banjo/vocals) play and sing North Atlantic dance tunes and folk songs.

Steeped in Irish music for as far back as she can remember, Oona spent many years living in Cork, Ireland, where she honed her skills as a fiddle player and Irish music specialist. Upon moving back to her hometown of Ithaca, NY, Oona immersed herself in the local traditional music scene and incorporated old time and Cajun tunes into her repertoire.

Growing up outside Louisville, KY, James was surrounded by music from an early age; radio, vinyl records, church music, and live concerts were a part of daily life. Finding his own musical style as an adult, James always keeps his ears open for sounds – new, old, familiar, or strange. While singing and playing guitar and banjo with Drank The Gold, he delves into the traditions of American old time and Irish dance tunes, while keeping true to his borderless, experimental musical roots. Now based in Saratoga Springs, NY, Oona and James collaborate as Drank The Gold, bringing new perspectives and innovative arrangements to the music they love. Craic agus ceol (good times and music)!

A variety pastries, teas, and coffees will be served as Lisa Fenwick presents a program on both Celtic lever harp and pedal harp. The concert will include a variety of music styles with a strong emphasis on Celtic music in celebration of St. Patrick's Day week. Lisa will engage with the audience and share her love for the instrument by sharing a bit about how the instrument works and a bit of information about how the harp has evolved over time.

Lisa Fenwick is an active harp performer throughout the region. When not playing harp, Lisa teaches harp, flute, and piano to all ages. Originally trained as a flutist, Lisa has served as an adjunct professor of music at SUNY Cortland and was on the faculty of the Community School of Music and Arts in Ithaca for over 20 years. She has maintained her own teaching studio since college as well as running and teaching Kindermusik of Ithaca for 14 years.

Lisa was originally drawn to the harp when playing in a flute and harp duo in college and she began to study harp right around this time. Lisa has played with the harp ensemble Harps on the Susquehanna and in the harp duo Enchantment as well as with other local performing groups but now most often performs throughout the region as a solo harpist. She has played numerous solo recitals throughout the area and often plays for weddings and other special events. She teaches harp both online and in her Ithaca studio.

The Radisson Hotel Corning (radisson.com/corningny) in the heart of the Gaffer District is kicking things up a notch beginning this March in celebration of the start of spring.  Upcoming community events include:  

St. Pat’s Shindig: All Irish eyes will be smiling when Radisson Corning brings back the good times on St. Patty’s weekend with a free Irish-themed concert on March 17th from 6 pm to 9 pm featuring local Irish folk singer Pat Comstock.  In addition to traditional Irish music, revelers are invited to don their favorite green wears and enjoy Irish corned beef and other traditional foods and drinks in Radisson’s signature restaurant, Grill 1-2-5, and Steuben Bar.  Contact the restaurant directly at 607.962.5000 ext 127 for more info and reservations.

Radisson LIVE: Radisson Corning has brought back its weekly live music every week indoors now through April featuring the hottest sounds of the local Finger Lakes region.  Guests can see a no-cover show inside from 6 pm to 9 pm while enjoying local wines, beers, and craft cocktails as well as a chef-crafted menu.  Beginning in late April, the Live scene will move outside to Market Street Social and expand to three nights a week, Thursday through Saturday.  The March schedule is as follows: March 4 – Another Round, March 10 – Mike Lucey, March 16 – Pat Kane, March 17 – Pat Comstock, March 31 – Rachel Beverly.  

Recruitment Days: In preparation of the big change of hotel flags this summer, the soon to be Double Tree by Hilton Corning Downtown is now hiring. Recruitment Days will be held on location every Tuesday in March from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm.
